Stop the DA from using Mandela in election advert‚ says grandson

Nelson Mandela’s grandson today (Friday) has asked the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (Asasa) to stop the Democratic Alliance from using Mandela’s voice in an election advertisement.

The ad suggests that‚ were he alive‚ the Mandela would have considered voting for the DA.

The use of his voice was not approved by his family or the Nelson Mandela Foundation‚ said Zwelivelile Mandela in his complaint to the IEC and Asasa.

“For the DA to use uTata’s voice against the ANC is a distortion of fact and a distortion of history. It is unfair‚ unpalatable‚ unethical and unacceptable‚” he wrote.

There is a sense in which Mandela belongs to all South Africans‚ “but his legacy is not for sale to political parties. Not to the DA‚ EFF‚ FF+ or any other party”.
