Ask any horror film fundi and they’ll tell you: director James Wan is the closest thing to a young horror legend.

The 39-year old baby-faced director‚ most famous for his work on horror films such as SAW‚ Insidious and The Conjuring series‚ has been at the helm of some of the scariest moments in recent box office history.

But sitting across from him in a hotel room in cloudy London‚ it’s hard to believe that the man responsible for so much suspense-filled thrills could carry such a light and welcoming smile

TMG Entertainment caught up with James at a screening of his latest project The Conjuring 2 in the city recently‚ where he opened up about where he draws his inspiration from.

James returned to the director’s chair for the project‚ having turned down a chance to direct the latest film in the popular Fast and the Furious series‚ Fast 8.

“It’s something I missed while I was away“

He explained that although he worked on Fast 7‚ the appeal of returning to one of his original projects held far more appeal.

“Fast and the Furious 7 was such an amazing experience for me. To work with such a big canvas and with such talented actors. But at the end of the day it’s someone else’s franchise.” he said. “There’s a large pride of ownership with things that I’ve created and so to go back and expand on this world that I had created was a large appeal. It’s something I missed while I was away.”

A family reunion

He likened returning to the set of The Conjuring to that of a family reunion.

“I’m such a fan of the horror genre and I had so much fun working with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. For us it was like three kids playing on a film set and the opportunity to expand on that world was really cool‚” he added.

Making a masterpiece

At the time of The Conjuring’s release‚ James was widely praised for his ability to weave several different elements of cinematography and suspense to craft a masterpiece within the horror genre. He explained the secret behind the process.

“It really is the connective tissues of connecting something to something else. Kind of knowing when to go with certain techniques and when not to. For me‚ the scare set pieces are about finding things that we haven’t really seen before and try to find new ways to show people. Part of the challenge for me is to find something unique and a new voice for things that we’ve seen before while trying to cook up things we haven’t‚” he said.
