Make our taxi ranks like those at OR Tambo airport‚ say taxi bosses

Taxi bosses in Gauteng want the government to upgrade their ranks to the level of OR Tambo International Airport.

And they also warned government to deal with the Uber taxi system which they regard as  “swine flu” which is spreading and threatening to infect the industry further.

Premier David Makhura and his cabinet met with taxi bosses in Johannesburg on Thursday to listen to their grievances.

The Gauteng chairperson of the SA National Taxi Council‚ Johannes Mkhonza‚ warned the government to take the industry serious.

“This Uber is a swine flu‚ and it is spreading like a virus. We want to know how is Uber legislated. Uber is a new system in this industry but it is already recognised and they have been issued with an operating licence yet our members do not have licences. Our main grievance is that we have been talking for years about permits‚” Mkhonza said.

Mkhonza said conditions in the taxi ranks around the province were unhygienic and there were no security features similar to those at OR Tambo International Airport.

“If you compare our facilities like OR Tambo airport‚ there is a great difference. In our ranks there are no toilets‚ camera‚ police officers. We saying government must improve our conditions. Our commuters must be safe. You go to OR Tambo airport within 100 metres there is a police officer‚” he said.

The operators complained about the duplication of routes which result in violence.

And they called on government to exempt the industry from paying e-tolls.
