Police have reportedly arrested a man in connection with the murder of an African National Congress (ANC) supporter on June 19 – the first incident in violent protests related to the party’s choice of mayoral candidate for Tshwane.

Talk Radio 702’s Mia Lindeque — ?@MiaLindeque – tweeted: “#TshwaneUnrest Police have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the murder of an ANC supporter on the 19th of June.”

A report on the station said the suspect had been taken into custody on Tuesday‚ and would appear soon on a charge of murder.

Simon Mollo Modihe was shot and killed on June 19 outside the Tshwane Events Centre‚ where ANC regional leaders had gathered to consider the imposition by the party’s national leadership of Thoko Didiza as its pick to run for mayor.

The formal announcement of Didiza — over the locals’ choice of either the incumbent mayor or his deputy — the next day was followed by days of violence‚ looting and arson attacks in the capital.

Modihe was the first of five people to lose their lives in the violence.

ANC secretary-general Jessie Duarte at the time condemned the attack‚ saying the party “is deeply disturbed by the outbreak of violence” and “condemns heinous acts in the strongest terms possible and will act decisively where it is proven that any of our members were responsible for the shooting”.
