‘Tell me why my son was killed in Boipatong’

As the community of Boipatong commemorates the 24th anniversary of the massacre‚ Evelyn Khomou still doesn’t know why her son was shot on June 17 1992.

Speaking to TMG Digital on Friday‚ Khomou‚ 78‚ said nobody had bothered to explain things to her.

“Every year‚ when the community holds such anniversary events‚ I don’t feel like participating because nobody has thoroughly explained why my son was shot‚” she said.

But Khomou she has forgiven whoever killed her son because it was probably for a good cause.

“The blood that was shed there was shed for a good cause and it has nourished the freedom tree. Now we are living in a free country. Those who lie in their graves … we are saying they should not lie there in shame.”

Her son‚ Ntinti Jacob Mntambo‚ would be turning 57 this year.

The government has spent hundreds of thousands in repatriation for those affected by the massacre. But all Khomou wants is for the government to help her with counselling. Compensation is the least of her problems‚ she added.

“If I can get help regarding what I’m currently going through‚ I would really appreciate it. As it stands‚ I’ve got high blood pressure and diabetes.”
