Only weeks after announcing a 90% local music quota across its 18 radio stations‚ the SABC has reaffirmed its commitment to increasing the amount of local content on its television platforms.

Just a few weeks ago the SABC announced in a statement that it has set a goal to increase the amount of local content on its television platforms from July 1.

Talking to TMG Entertainment on Thursday‚ SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that the broadcaster will go ahead with the plans and has already introduced a number of reform to make it easier for more local content to be broadcast on its platforms.

“We first announced a new language policy across the stations and then called a meeting with local film producers to find out how we can make the process of producing more local content a lot easier‚” he said.

Although the SABC has introduced a set 90% local quota for its radio stations‚ Kaizer said the broadcaster cannot introduce the same quota for its television stations just yet.

“We want local content to dominate on our TV platforms but it’s a more gradual process‚” Kaizer said.

He said that the same formula for bringing about a quota of local music cannot be applied to TV.

“We want an immediate transformation but TV is different. With radio‚ we can introduce a set quota immediately but with TV we have to be realistic and realise it’s a process. That is why we are calling on local producers to provide us with content.”
