Nehawu threatens strikes beyond Parliament

The National Education‚ Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) is threatening strike action if Parliament’s presiding officers do not meet workers demands.

The issue at stake is the payment of bonuses and what the union claims are the “unilateral” reductions in the performance ratings of some employees.

The union also claimed that Parliament has violated an agreement that was reached after an unprotected strike of nearly four weeks late last year over similar issues. It has lodged several complaints with the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration.

Secretary to Parliament Gengezi Mgidlana said at a media briefing on Friday that Parliament did not intend to change the December agreement and the question was one of implementation.

Nehawu said in a statement on Friday that it would broaden its strike action to not only Parliament‚ but to provincial legislatures across the country if its demands are not met.

“At this point‚ the union calls on all of its members in Parliament and all provincial legislatures to prepare for the battle ahead‚” a union statement said. Indeed‚ the union is planning to kickstart its rolling mass action in the month of June 2016‚ pending the response of the employer‚ in particular the presiding officers.”
