Injured Wits students could be transferred to Joburg hospitals

The six University of the Witwatersrand students injured in the fatal accident on the N1 on Sunday night will be assessed on Tuesday and transported back to Johannesburg if surgery is needed.

Eight people – seven students and a driver – were killed when their taxi‚ travelling back to Johannesburg from a Zion Christian Church pilgrimage they had attended in Moletjie‚ just outside Polokwane – struck the trailer of an overturned truck.

The taxi caught fire near the NYL plaza tollgate.

Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel said that the injured students would be assisted on Tuesday and arrangements made to transfer them to Johannesburg hospitals if necessary.

On Monday‚ the university dispatched “a team to gather further information on the ground and to support the family and friends of those that have passed away”.

The university said its information about the accident had been gleaned from a student travelling in a car behind the taxi.

Wits vice-chancellor Professor Adam Habib also travelled to Limpopo.

“The university extends its deepest sympathies to the friends and family of those who passed away during this difficult period‚” a statement said. — TMG Digital
