Zuma judgment upholds concept of equality before the law

The Centre for Constitutional Rights said Friday’s high court judgment regarding the president and the withdrawal of charges against him in 2009 affirmed the notion of equality as “enshrined” in the Constitution.

The centre was reacting to the decision by the Pretoria high court that the decision by former National Prosecuting Authority head Mokotedi Mpshe to drop the charges was irrational.

The judgment‚ the centre said‚ affirmed that no one‚ regardless of rank‚ should be above the law.

“That the president may very well stand trial for corruption charges is hardly ideal for any nation but that is the precise value of equality before the law‚” the centre said.
