Teacher beats girl he had affair with

The incident took place at the John Wesley Kosi Bay Private School in Manguzi, near the Mozambique-South Africa border, last Thursday and has been reported to the police.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane confirmed yesterday that the 31-year-old teacher had been arrested and charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. He said the complainant was believed to be a Grade 11 pupil.

The teacher appeared in court on Monday and will appear again on May 10.

The teacher, whose name is known to Sowetan, is alleged to have been involved in a romantic relationship with the pupil and the two are believed to have argued before the alleged assault.

School principal SB Gumede yesterday said he had been instructed not to comment on the matter. He also declined to provide contact details of the school governing body chairman. "It's a sensitive issue," he said.

Although corporal punishment was abolished in the country in terms of the Schools Act of 1996, it still takes place in schools.

As many as 1.5million pupils across South Africa were victims of corporal punishment in 2014 alone, with the SA Council for Educators receiving 637 complaints of corporal punishment between April 2012 and March 2015.
