IEC urges those eligible to vote to take final chance to register

The final round of voter registration takes place this weekend and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Wednesday called on all those eligible to vote to the take the final opportunity to register.

Speaking at a press briefing at the IEC headquarters in Centurion‚ CEO Mosotho Moepya said that significantly increasing the voters roll – currently sitting at 25.6-million registered voters – would require a large number of first-time voters.

More than 3-million South African voters visited voting stations during last month’s registration weekend to register as first-time voters‚ as well as re-register or update their details.

Moepya said 80% of the 8-million eligible voters who were not yet registered were younger than 30.

This coming weekend‚ 22617 voter registration stations will be open throughout the country from 8am to 5pm to allow eligible voters to register.
