Fight over beer turns deadly

A woman who allegedly stabbed a neighbour to death because she apparently did not want the man to drink her uncle's beer, appeared in the Itsoseng Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a white T-shirt, Mmathapelo Setlhodi, 34, appeared briefly on a charge of murder.

The matter was postponed to today to allow Setlhodi to get a legal representative and for a possible bail application. She allegedly stabbed Leeti Molefe, 57, with a knife after an argument on Saturday, the court heard.

Outside court, the deceased's family member, Ronnie Mathobela, alleged Setlhodi was angry that her uncle had just arrived from work and he was spending money buying his friends booze.

Mathobela said on the day, Setlhodi's uncle and Molefe were sitting drinking their beers when Setlhodi entered the yard and started shouting.

She reportedly told Molefe that he was a beggar and that all he wanted from her uncle was money and booze whereas they [her family] were suffering.

"We understand that she was not happy to see her uncle buying my uncle booze. She then stabbed him twice next to his shoulder and he died instantly," Mathobela said.

According to North West police spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone, Setlhodi was arrested the same day.

Mathobela said what saddened his family most was that Molefe was leaving the yard when the incident happened.

"She followed him to the gate. She should have just left him [alone] because he was leaving," Mathobela said.

He said all they wanted was for the law to take its course.

"My uncle was a good person, he was loved by many [people] and was very peaceful.

"This woman must be punished for this senseless death," he said.

Itsoseng residents flocked in numbers to court in support of Molefe's family.

Eunice Maiphetlo said what happened was unbelievable.

"We are heartbroken about what happened at our township, this woman is a troublemaker. We still can't understand why she had to stab an innocent man to death," she said.

Molefe will be buried in Itsoseng on Saturday.
