Gauteng gets first female police commissioner

The face of Gauteng policing has been changed‚ with history being made with appointment of the province’s first woman police commissioner.

Lieutenant-General Deliwe Suzan de Lange took office on Tuesday.

Her mission is clear: To sweep the province clean of crime and corruption.

She was among the first 20 black female police officers to be accepted into the police and trained at Hammanskraal police college in 1983‚ where she stayed on to become a firearms instructor.

Known for her disciplinary approach to policing‚ police spokesman Colonel Noxolo Kweza said De Lange — who had won numerous awards for policing — had risen through the ranks gaining experience in crime prevention as well as from commanding several police stations.
