A reward of R50 000 is being offered for information on the two men involved in the murder of a 53-year-old Metro Police officer killed in Cape Town on Monday.

Ben Koopman was on duty when he was shot and killed outside his Avon Road, Eerste River home shortly after 15:00.

Metro Police deputy chief, Yolande Faro, confirmed the officer’s gun and handheld radio were taken.

“He was… married with three children,” she said.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the city’s Special Investigations Unit was headed to the scene to start gathering information.

“Chaplains have been dispatched to assist the family with trauma counselling,” he said.

Police said the circumstances and motive for the murder were being investigated.
