Cape Town students build shack‚ complete with portable toilet‚ at UCT

A group of students at the University of Cape Town have erected a shack on campus in a protest over access to residences.

“This is the new res #Shackville for Black students who are #HomelessAtUCT‚” said #AllOppressionsFall @IAmAFallist‚ sharing photos of the green shack with its own portable toilet.

“It is necessary‚ as part of the project to disrupt the architectural tone of the university. #Shackville‚” the Rhodes Must Fall movement said on Twitter.

The university said three staff‚ Professor Francis Petersen‚ Professor Anwar Mall and Dr Russell Alley‚ are engaging with student protesters.

“A structure has been put up at Jammie stairs and bins were set alight this morning‚” UCT ?@UCT–news posted.

“Campus is still operational and we’re investigating the matter.”

UCT has an emergency hotline‚ established prior to this‚ for students experiencing difficulty with residence accommodation.
