The South African Communist Party (SACP) has welcomed the decision by the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) to charge its former prosecutor and now Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament‚ Glynnis Breytenbach‚ with obstruction and defeating the ends of justice.

The SACP said it believed that Ms Breytenbach still had a lot to answer for about her behaviour while she was in the NPA. This included “very serious allegations of conflicts of interest and corruption on her part”.

“It is time that Glynnis Breytenbach is held accountable‚ now that the NPA is satisfied with its assessment of the case‚ it added.

Ms Breytenbach is facing charges of obstructing the ends of justice and contravening the National Security Act.

The National Prosecuting Authority says the charges relate to its 2012 investigation into Breytenbach’s alleged misconduct.

She allegedly refused to hand over a laptop to investigators before she got rid of official and private data on the computer.
