The South African Revenue Service (Sars) on Tuesday announced that King Shaka International Airport recorded its largest currency bust for the year so far at the weekend.

Its customs officials “intercepted a consignment of currency worth R7-million” after a baggage handler had become “suspicious when three suitcases scheduled for loading at the departing Emirates flight to Amman via Dubai were being removed from the international arrivals hall”.

Investigations revealed that “the owner of the bags requested a change on the bags’ final destination without making a declaration to customs”‚ a Sars statement said.

When the bags were put through a luggage scan‚ “the scanned images identified were neither clothing nor personal items‚ but South African rand bank notes with total of R7049320”.

The passenger and cash were handed over to the South African Police Service.
