The EFF said on Sunday that it aims to win the upcoming local elections as a first step to taking over national government by 2019.

“The Economic Freedom Fighters will contest the local government elections with the view to win them – as a step towards total takeover in the 2019 general elections,” spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement following the party's second national plenum, held in Benoni at the weekend.

“Every municipality, every ward and very community shall be contested with credible candidates approved through robust consultations with the people, " Ndlozi said.

The party said that it would launch branches all over South Africa: “in the farms, workplaces, campuses, villages, and all informal settlements".

The party declared that it would spread the word of ‘economic freedom’ using all and every means of travel.

“We will use bicycles, donkey-carts, cars, lorries, trucks, buses, trains, planes, helicopters, ships, boats and all forms of transport.”

Municipal elections are due to take place between May and August this year.
