Parliament wants post-apartheid laws interrogated

Former president Kgalema Motlanthe will chair a panel to review existing legislation dating back to 1994‚ for any “unintended consequences” it may have had on communities especially in terms of transformation.

Parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete said on Tuesday the advisory panel will look at laws that require strengthening or changing in the interest of the development agenda.

Other members include Judge Navi Pillay‚ former cabinet minister Brigette Mabandla‚ banker Paul Harris and former Auditor General Terrence Nombembe.

Mbete said the mandate of the panel will focus on: 1. Unemployment‚ poverty‚ inequality 2. Creation & equitable redistribution of wealth 3. Land reform 4. Nation building and social cohesion.

The advisory panel has 12 months to do its work.
