Vavi condemns minister of labour comments

Former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Monday condemned the labour minister for accusing him of involvement in the labour brokering business.

In a statement Vavi accused Minister Mildred Oliphant of aligning him to the brokering business while speaking on Power FM on Monday.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the wild and defamatory allegations made by the Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant... There can be no doubt that she was referring to me when she accused 'the former GS of Cosatu'."

Vavi added that he supported the statement by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) that "the allegations made by the minister of labour are part of the broader political offensive and disinformation campaign" against himself and Numsa.

"I place on record that I have no business interests or deals with labour brokering firms and companies. I remain opposed to these human traffickers and will never stop campaigning for them to be banned.

"I challenge the minister of labour to back-up her allegations by publicly disclosing the names of labour broker companies in which I have an interest and the evidence of my involvement. If she cannot do so, she must retract the statement and make a public apology."
