Government to ‘vigorously’ tackle corruption in local authorities

Corruption in municipalities would be tackled with vigour and determination‚ President Jacob Zuma warned on Thursday‚ adding that the uprooting of corruption was a core objective of the government’s Back to Basics programme.

Addressing the National Council of Provinces‚ he said that 222 officials had already been dismissed for fraud and corruption in the nine months from October 2014 to June 2015.

Going forward‚ anti-corruption measures would include the monitoring of the implementation of the recommendations of all forensic investigations into municipalities.

A campaign with organised business would also be embarked upon to counter private sector involvement in corruption in municipalities‚ Zuma stated.

“We will make better use of available monitoring mechanisms such as unannounced municipal visits‚ spot checks of supply chain management processes‚ implementation of forensic reports recommendations and site visits of Municipal Infrastructure Grant funded projects‚” he cautioned.

He also noted that debt owed to municipalities by business and residential sectors was constraining municipalities. A specific campaign would be launched to alleviate this obstacle‚ he said.

The improvement of the Billing Systems of selected municipalities would receive dedicated attention.
