Reports of more leaks of matric exam papers prompted the Democratic Alliance to issue a statement on Monday calling for the Education Minister to explain the situation to Parliament.

The DA said on Monday that this year’s National Senior Certificate examinations are now “in question given reports that more papers have been leaked”.

The Times reported last week that “two matric pupils‚ who were caught with a leaked examination paper in Limpopo‚ were assisted by officials linked to the exam centre”.

Reports in the media on the weekend said that the leaked paper‚ Life Sciences‚ was also passed on to pupils in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. An executive of Umalusi‚ the national body tasked with overseeing matric exams‚ confirmed that the paper had been leaked.

“The Department of Basic Education has hinted at further leaks‚ stating that it is not limiting its investigation to Life Sciences Paper 2. The Department also admitted that the leak extends beyond the one school mentioned at the press briefing last Tuesday and now includes a total of eleven schools in the Vhembe district‚” the DA said in its statement.

The DA is demanding that Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga “make an Executive statement in the National Assembly in terms of NA Rule 106(1) on the examination crisis as a matter of urgency. People have a right to know the extent of the leaks and what the Minister is doing about the problem.”
