A unit at the Duvha Power Station in Mpumalanga that has been off stream since March 2014 after over-pressurisation experienced by a boiler will only be back on stream in 2019/20‚ Eskom said on Saturday.
The country’s power supply grid has been impacted by the problem as the unit provided 575 MW to the national grid.
“Eskom’s recovery programme continues and projections are that Duvha Unit 3 will be fully recovered in the 2019/2020 financial year.
“The boiler needs to be replaced‚ however issues of technology assessment and cost uncertainty have delayed progress on this project‚” Eskom said.
It said that most of the country’s electricity came from thermal power stations‚ fuelled by coal.
“Most of these coal-fired stations comprise six generating units. Each production unit has a boiler‚ a turbine that drives a generator as well as control and auxiliary support systems.
“To give you an idea boilers can be as high as a 35-storey office block.
“A proposed investment and commercial process will be submitted to the Eskom governance committees for a decision on the way forward regarding Duvha Unit 3‚” the power provider said.
It added that the power system was currently stable.
