Girl raped on way to write her examinations

A grade 11 pupil on her way to write exams was raped in Malamulele, Limpopo.

The girl is a pupil at Nghezimani High School which shot to prominence for its yearly participation in the World's Children's Prize for the Rights of Children.

The competition helps children to know their rights and also helps in the fight against crime, including rape.

Saselamani police spokesman Warrant Officer Sam Matsimbi said the 17-year-old girl was accosted by two men on Friday when she was about to reach Nghezimani village.

He said the pupil was walking alone on foot as some of her schoolmates had sat for exams earlier that morning.

Matsimbi reiterated the call that pupils going to school in the Saselamani area should walk in groups.

There have been several attacks on pupils going to school in the area.

In one instance a pupil going to Xikundu High School sustained five stab wounds when she and two of her fellow pupils fought off would-be rapists.

Matsimbi said police had opened a rape docket.

No one has been arrested and investigations are going on.

Ambassadors of the UN programme at the school said the programme assisted them to be aware of crime targeted at children. They said they have learnt not to go alone to the bush.
