Housing nears 4-million mark‚ says Zuma

President Jacob Zuma on Thursday said that 3.8-million houses or serviced sites had so far been delivered through the government’s housing projects‚ and that the figure would soon reach the 4-million mark.

Speaking at the official handover of the N2 Gateway Integrated Housing Project in Kwa-Langa Township‚ Western Cape‚ Zuma said 12-million people had so far benefited from the housing programme. He said the government was forging ahead in “our mission to fulfill our constitutional mandate to provide adequate and decent housing for our people”.

The N2Gateway was established to deliver 20‚000 housing units by 2014 to clear informal settlements along the N2 Gateway from the Cape Town International Airport.

The project was meant to house families whose joint income ranges between R3500 and R15000 a month‚ who would not ordinarily qualify for the government’s housing subsidy scheme and were unable to secure bonds from financial institutions.

Zuma said: “Unlike in the past‚ most of the shacks seen along the freeway from the airport to the city centre have now given way to these beautiful blocks of flats that have blended nicely with Kwa-Langa Township.

“We wanted to ensure that the N2 Gateway project become an important intervention for national housing initiatives and we realised that in order to cater for the needy residents of the City‚ there had to be a change of gear and approach in the way of doing things. “

He said the project was one of many in various provinces aimed at reducing the housing backlog.

“As you can see‚ the N2 Gateway is nearing completion and it has so far delivered 14‚000 homes‚ just 6‚000 units short of our 20‚000 target‚” he said.

“When completed‚ we believe that this project and many others similar to it‚ will make a dent on the housing backlog currently experienced in most of the country’s major urban centres.”

In August‚ Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu called on the Housing Development Agency (HDA) to complete the remaining phases of the N2 Gateway Housing project by 2019 or sooner.

“I want the remaining 6‚000 units to be completed by 2019‚ or before 2019‚” she said at the time.
