Paramedics were called to the Tshwane Events Centre (Pretoria Show Grounds) on Sunday morning were 40 people sustained injuries in a ‘stampede’.

It is reported that the people were trying to gain access to a church event.

An elderly woman, believed to be in her 60’s, was found with severe pelvic injuries and a man  around his 30’s was found with severe knee injures and both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital because they were in a serious condition.

Thirteen people were transported to nearby hospital for injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

ER24 reports that some of the people refused to be transported to hospital and chose to go back into the venue to attend the church event.

Although the exact cause of the incident is yet unknown, paramedics were told that people were gathering outside the closed gate when people started pushing from the back to gain access. The gate eventually burst open and some people fell to the ground with other people falling and trampling over them.

The attendees said that a church event is held at the show grounds every Sunday.

Police were on the scene
