ANC official 'pointed gun' at DA man

A North West ANC official who allegedly threatened to kill a DA councillor is now facing a charge of intimidation.

The ANC official allegedly threatened to kill Romeo Matjila, a DA senior c onstituency officer at Ikageng in Tlokwe, should he make himself available as a candidate for the 2016 l ocal government elections.

Matjila joined the DA earlier this year after serving in the EFF leadership structures in North West.

It is alleged that following the threat, Matjila was followed by an unknown person from his house and, after a high-speed car chase, the car stopped next to him and the driver pointed a firearm at him.

"Romeo's wife spotted a car driving slowly on Tuesday close to the house in Ikageng township [in Potchefstroom] and the driver made a U-turn when he realised that Romeo was not home," said the DA's Juanita Terblanche.

"Later that day the car followed Romeo from his house. The car chased Romeo's car and stopped next to it three streets away from the house. Romeo was then threatened with a firearm."

A case of intimidation and pointing a firearm has been opened.

ANC secretary in North West Dakota Legoete said: "The ANC does not condone acts of intimidation. If a person is found guilty of intimidation he must face the law."

Police are still investigating the case so the name of the accused ANC official cannot be released.
