ANCYL president will remain an MEC

Collen Maine will not have to give up his job as an MEC following his election as ANC Youth League president.

This was a decision taken by the new ANCYL national executive committee. Secretary general Njabulo Nzuza told News24 that this was in line with the organisation's constitution.

"If you look at the constitution of the ANCYL it says... firstly that the position of secretary general is full time and the NEC will decide which other positions become full time.

"We [the NEC] decided that the positions which are going to be full time are the secretary general and the treasurer general."

Nzuza said this was not abnormal.

Maine will continue to do his work as North West Local Government and Human Settlement MEC and still lead the ANCYL.

Questions have been raised regarding how much Maine would earn as ANCYL president.

It is understood that Maine receives more than R1m a year as MEC.

When Julius Malema was ANCYL president there was a newspaper report claiming he earned R20 000 a month.

This was denied by the ANC and the ANCYL at the time but the real amount was never disclosed.
