'Horny' teachers to be probed for theft of fees

Teachers from a Tembisa school have written to education MEC Panyaza Lesufi accusing their colleagues of squandering hundreds of thousands in school funds and of sleeping with pupils.

Tembisa High School principal Elsie Mpakoa, her deputy Vusi Malinga, the school's head of department (HOD) Bennett Tsenase and school governing body (SGB) chairman Chris Mkhaliphi will be subject to an investigation launched by Lesufi.

Gauteng department of education spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said that the MEC has decided to appoint an independent auditing firm to look into the allegations.

Another forensic investigation into the school's financial affairs was instituted in the 2009/2010 financial year but the report is yet to be released.

In the letter, the teachers accuse the school management of misappropriating R186820 of schools funds, which appear in the 2014 financial report as unaccounted for.

The deputy principal and HOD are accused of being involved in sexual relationships with pupils, some of whom fell pregnant.

The school was once "the flagship of the township".

The teachers further accused Mkhaliphi of imposing himself as the school's SGB chairman while he is yet to answer to allegations of fraud at Isiziba Primary School in the East Rand township, where he was also an SGB chairman.

The teachers also accused Mkhaliphi of buying Xhosa books although the school does not offer the language. He allegedly procured, at inflated prices, English books that were also not required and signed himself a cheque.

They claim Tsenase, Malinga and Mpakoa, paid bribes to be appointed to their positions.

Tsenase allegedly paid R20000, Malinga R15000 while Mpakoa paid R30000 to get their positions.

Tsenase is also accused of appointing himself as a service provider to the school and authorising payment which was paid into his account.

Malinga is also accused of collecting money from outstanding school fees and for lost textbooks without giving out receipts and pocketing the money.

"We furthermore like to inform the department that Mr Malinga and Tsenase impregnated school girls in the past. What is more disturbing is that they, especially Tsenase, are still busy sleeping with school kids without shame.

"We are now left in the leadership of a clueless principal and the ship is sinking fast. We are afraid that a disaster in the form of poor results is awaiting us at the end of the year," reads part of the letter.

The teachers have also threatened to approach public protector Thuli Madonsela.
