Sindisiwe Manqele said she and Nkululeko “Flabba” Habedi‚ her rapper boyfriend whom she stabbed to death in March‚ had a “close” relationship.

Manqele took the witness stand on Tuesday after the state closed its case in her murder trial on Monday.

She is charged in the Johannesburg High Court sitting at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court with the murder of Skwatta Kamp band member Habedi‚ 37.

Habedi died of a stab wound to the chest on March 9 in his home in Alexandra‚ Johannesburg.

Manqele‚ 26‚ has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has said that she stabbed him in self-defence.

She testified that she is a business studies student at Griffith College in Ireland and works part-time. She told the court that she arrived in South Africa in December for the holidays and was about to return to Ireland when she killed Habedi.

She testified that she had been staying with Habedi in Alexandra since February‚ a month after they had had a quarrel about his alleged infidelity.

She said they had been dating since 2006.

She said after she and Habedi made up‚ they went on holiday together.

Asked to describe her relationship with Habedi‚ she said: “We were in a close relationship. We were on good terms.”

She said while Habedi was popular and received attention from male and female fans‚ she was not bothered by it.

Manqele cried as she told the court that her mother and brother died in 2008.

The trial continues.
