UN’s ‘highest environmental honour’ to be launched in Pretoria

The Champions of the Earth Award‚ said to be the United Nations’ “highest environmental honour”‚ will be launched in Pretoria on Monday.

It will‚ a statement from the United Nations Environment Programme and the Department of Environmental Affairs said‚ recognise “outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy‚ science‚ entrepreneurship‚ and civil society action”.

The award “seeks to distinguish men and women whose actions and leadership have made a positive impact on the environment”.

Among the guests named in the statement were Felicia Mogakane and Colet Inah Ngobeni of the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit‚ which “is the first-ever first all-female team in the world‚ operating in the Kruger National Park”.

“The 26 young women are drawn from local communities and patrol the national park area unarmed. The well-trained unit is not just challenging poachers‚ but the status quo.”
