Watch: Akon talks about his 'ambitious' Lighting Africa initiative

Musician and businessman Akon says that his initial plan was to only light up a million houses in Africa but his project has grown beyond anyone's expectations.

The Senegalese has launched a project that will bring electricity to over 600 million Africans.

Launched in February 2014, the Akon Lighting Africa project has received a lot of support.

Akon, full name Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Bongo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, hopes to change to over 600 million African lives with this project.

He says the project is inspired by the fact that kids cannot do their school work at night, women cannot carry out their basic household tasks and, among others, the fact that over 3.5 million Africans die every year from "harmful pollutants or fires in the home produced by costly and toxic solid fuels".
