A massive housing project in Nelson Mandela Bay that saw thousands of toilets built for future RDP houses is slowly being stripped by thieves.

The municipality built the toilets in Despatch to fasttrack an end to the bucket system.

The toilets are meant for residents at the bottom of the RDP housing waiting lists.

Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said the toilets cost R49-million and were for 1013 families.

But when residents began moving on site‚ there was resistance from others.

“We are aware of vandalism and we condemn the criminal acts in the strongest possible terms‚” Mniki said.
