GOING BUNU BASHING

Lesotho prime minister Phakalitha Mosisili has made known what he thinks of Swaziland, that is apparently host to some Basotho who claim to be in exile.

He said some of the so-called exiles had timed their stay in Swaziland to coincide with the reed dance.

"A friend of mine once said: 'eSwatini sibona tibunu' [in Swaziland we see bums]", Mosisili said at a press conference the other day, in apparent reference to the reed dance. The journalists looked surprised.

While waiting for him to translate, Mosisili said, to his own amusement, that interpretation of the line would distort the meaning.

REED BETWEEN LINES

Speaking of the reed dance, Mosisili could be in trouble with Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini who is the pioneer of the revival of the reed dance and is married to two Swazi women who participated in the cultural practice when they were virgins.

Vera suggests for the sake of peaceful relations among the kingdoms, Mosisili should consider apologising to the Swazi and Zulu kingdoms for suggesting that the reed dance is all about bums and implying that the subjects of King Letsie may have gone to Swaziland on a sex tourism mission.

REDS UNDER TUT BEDS

South African politics would be certainly be dull without the red-overall types, known as the EFF.

In an attempt to win the hearts, minds and even the bodies of university students, its so-called commander Julius Malema promised new, decent mattresses for students.

"We'll fight to change your living conditions in hostels. It's not only the mattress we want to change," Malema said, to cheers from the gathered students at the Tshwane University of Technology.

In politics, everything counts. Next there will be the campaign to provide pillows.

Watch the space.

BELONGS IN A MUSEUM

Finally, Umntwana waKwaPhindangene will be honoured with a museum in his name. He has been struggling for recognition for years.

He had waxed lyrical about how he demanded Mandela's release from prison. Nobody believed him.

He had been saying that the IFP was formed with the approval of Oliver Tambo. Still nobody believed him.

He had said he was never part of the apartheid homelands. People thought this was just spin.

He had said the IFP never killed anybody. That too was never believed.

Vera hopes Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Museum and Documentation Centre in Ulundi will set the record straight.

And can the Buthelezi retire from politics now, please.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Where is former SABC chairwoman Ellen Tshabalala who popularised the idea of a desire to have qualifications?
