Radio presenter arrested for sexual assault threats gets bail

A well-known Kingfisher FM presenter who was arrested at the radio station’s offices on Tuesday on a charge of sexual assault was granted bail of R2000 in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

He was ordered not to make contact with the complainant or her family.

The man‚ who cannot be named or identified until he pleads in court‚ was arrested at the radio station’s offices on Tuesday for allegedly stalking a 22-year-old woman and repeatedly threatening over the phone to sexually assault her.

It is believed the woman met the suspect when he was promoting a charity event.

Kingfisher FM station general manager Alan Ahlfeldt told The Herald on Tuesday that the arrest had come as a big shock to everyone.

It marks the first prosecution of its kind in the city where no physical contact or assault had yet taken place against the victim.

Authorities remained tight-lipped about the arrest but confirmed that the Family Violence‚ Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit of the police was leading the investigation.

The presenter is being charged under Section 5(2) of the Sexual Offences Act‚ which states: “A person (‘A’) who unlawfully and intentionally inspires the belief in a complainant (‘B’) that B will be sexually violated‚ is guilty of the offence of sexual assault.”
