Donald and Dolly were 'love at first sight'

It was love at first sight when former Jozi FM DJ Donald “DJ Donald Duck” Sebolai first met his slain girlfriend in 2013.

The Johannesburg High Court‚ sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court southeast of Johannesburg‚ heard this on Wednesday when Sebolai began testifying in his murder trial.

Sebolai‚ 38‚ is accused of stabbing his girlfriend Flavia Rachel “Dolly” Tshabalala‚ 32‚ to death after the couple had a fight at his Soweto flat on June 29‚ last year.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Sebolai told the court that he called Tshabalala by a unique name - “Lala” - because she was special to him.

“I loved her. The first time I saw her‚ I just loved her‚” he said.

The DJ hosted a gospel music show on Jozi FM on Thursday afternoons until the Tshabalala's murder. He said the show encouraged people to love God‚ as he did‚ and that he hosted it "with passion".

“It did not matter if I was sick‚ on a Thursday I would definitely go to work‚” he said.

Tshabalala's mother‚ Elizabeth Marawa‚ testified earlier that she enjoyed listening to Sebolai on radio because he discussed topics like abuse against women and children on air.

She also said that she witnessed an argument between the couple in which Sebolai spilt milk on her daughter. Friend of the couple Palesa Matladi Seseli testified that she saw Sebolai hit Tshabalala.

Sebolai earlier denied spilling milk on Tshabalala‚ but admitted that he slapped her.

Sebolai testified that those who had previously told the court that they had witnessed fights between himself and Tshabalala were correct‚ and that jealousy was the cause.

Sebolai also told the court that he was invlolved with a campaign‚ “Walk in My Shoes”‚ which provided underprivileged children with shoes.

Before Sebolai stepped into the witness box‚ Judge Cassim Moosa made an order at the request of the defence that the media was not allowed to film Sebolai's face or place a microphone on the witness stand while the DJ testifies.

Defence advocate Thabang Mathopo said his client would not be comfortable being recorded during the course of his testimony.

The prosecution closed its case against Sebolai earlier on Wednesday after its final witness‚ investigating officer Detective Constable Isaac Oupa Kubheka‚ testified.

Kubheka said that he took a statement from Sebolai on the day of his arrest and the DJ admitted to killing Tshabalala‚ but said it was an accident.

Kubheka said Sebolai was not remorseful over what he had done and blamed Tshabalala for his arrest.

Sebolai also faces charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice for allegedly stealing Tshabalala's car and tampering with the crime scene.

He has also pleaded not guilty to these charges.

The trial continues.
