Discharged Tutu’s cancer ‘well under control’

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was discharged from hospital on Tuesday and “will continue his recovery at home”‚ a statement from the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said.

He had been admitted to hospital in Cape Town last week for “observation (and) treatment for a persistent infection (which) was a consequence of treatment for prostate cancer that the archbishop has received over the past 18 years”.

The cancer‚ itself‚ was well under control‚ his daughter‚ The Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said.

It was the second hospital visit in as many weeks for the archbishop‚ who celebrated Eucharist with Mpho Tutu in his ward on Tuesday morning.

The minister of health‚ Dr Aaron Motsoaledi‚ also paid him a visit before before he was discharged.

“He shared with Motsoaledi his concern that‚ while he had enjoyed first-class treatment and the attention of the finest doctors‚ most South Africans did not have access to decent health care‚” the foundation statement said.
