Cops 'rape' female suspects in holding cells

Two women have been allegedly raped while being in police custody in two different incidents.

A policeman has allegedly raped a 25 year old woman in one of the holding cells at Manenberg police station in Cape Town.

The policeman is accused of raping the 25 year old woman while she was in police custody on Saturday.

After the alleged rape occurred the woman was able to inform the officers on duty when they came in the morning and the matter was reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) and the officer taken into custody.

The woman has undergone a medical examination.

The NPA has yet to say whether they will prosecute or not. Ipid is investigating the incident.

In a separate incident in Johanesburg, another 25 year old woman was also allegedly raped by a police officer at the Linden Police Station. The woman was being detained for fraud.

It is alleged that the 45 year old police officer raped the woman in her holding cell on the 28th of June. She was able to inform officers on duty the next morning and was taken for medical examination and a case of raped opened.

The officer was arrested and has appeared at the Randburg Magistrates Court where he has been denied bail.
