Can you help Martin graduate?

Martin Sifunda needs only R5 000 to graduate from University.

Sifunda is a B.Sc Agricultural Economics student at the North West University, Mafikeng Campus, who was supposed to graduate on the 5th of May this year but  couldn’t due to a R5000 outstanding fee.

24 year old Sifunda passed all his subjects with flying colours, some with Distinctions.

Sifunda’s tuition was being paid by NFSAS but the financial issues faced by the organisation last year led to only half of his fees being paid.

To further fund his studies, Sifunda worked as a student assistant at the University but it just wasn’t enough.

His mother passed away in 2007 and his father who worked at BHP Billiton was retrenched in 2011. He has a little sister who is in grade 11.

“I’ve been looking for a job since January, I have been hoping that if I get a job I could pay off the fees.”

He has sales and marketing experience and a valid driver’s license.

Sowetan LIVE asked Sifunda if he had tried other means to raise the money, he said he didn’t.

We called the Finacial Office at the NWU Mafikeng Campus and spoke to a lady who did not wish to be named.

SowetanLIVE explained Martin’s situation and asked if there was any way they could help Martin.

The woman explained that her manager was not in the office and would only be back next week and it would be best for Martin Speak to the manager.

On the question on whether the University had a bursary scheme for cases such as Martin Sifunda’s, the lady responded no.

“We used to have a fund, well NFSAS used to have a fund that helped students graduate that couldn’t finish off paying their fees. But it was cancelled last year,” the woman said.

UPDATE:

We have received word that Martin has found help. His outstanding fees will be paid directly into the University's account. We would like to extend Martin's words of gratitude to all those that helped in their small way. And we as SowetanLIVE would also like to thank our community for all you have done.

Martin is still unemployed and in need of regular income to support his family so please do not hesitate to contact him if you have any information on Internships or job offers. His email address is  gura.jnr11@gmail.com
