Frans Matlala appointed as new SABC CEO

A consultant identified as an ally of SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has been named as the new CEO at the national broadcaster.

Banking executive Frans Matlala succeeds former CEO Lulama Mokhobo who quit last year amid speculation that she had had a difficult working relationship with Motsoeneng.

Matlala was previously hired as an “executive director” tasked with setting up a strategic programme management office at the SABC. According to the Sunday Times‚ his contract stipulated a fee of R2‚000 an hour‚ which amounted to more than R300‚000 a month. In November 2013 he was paid R348‚000‚ the report said.

Business Day reported last year that Motsoeneng favoured Matlala for the CEO job. It also reported on concerns that a new CEO will merely occupy a “ceremonial position” as Motsoeneng continues calling the shots.

Motsoeneng has survived several attempts to remove him from his position‚ stemming in part from the Public Protector’s finding that he had lied about having a matric and irregularly increased his own and certain staff members’ salaries.
