Nine elderly bystanders and two security guards were shot and wounded during a cash heist at Soshanguve Mall on Wednesday morning‚ the SA Police Service (SAPS) said.

Police believe that up to 10 armed suspects confronted Fidelity Security guards who were transporting money to a pension point.

“In the process‚ elderly citizens — two men and seven women — were shot and wounded on their lower bodies. Two guards were also wounded.

“The suspects abandoned a BMW vehicle while they were fleeing from the scene.”

The wounded have all been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The robbery took place at about 6am.
