Two children died when the shack they lived in caught fire in the Velwano informal settlement in NU1‚ Mdantsane on Monday.
It is alleged the blaze started when the children’s grandmother fell asleep while cooking on Monday night.
The children have been identified as five-year-old Avuzwa and three-year-old Avethandwa Mjaleni.
Relatives who live nearby were able to save the grandmother‚ Buyiswa Mjaleni‚ from the burning shack‚ but were unable to rescue the children.
Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said an inquest docket had been opened.
