Mpumalanga dam levels rise during drought

Fishermen and farming communities should be on the lookout for a rising tide of water in Mpumalanga near Piet Retief‚ Standerton and Amsterdam‚ warns the Department of Water and Sanitation.

On Tuesday June 30 water will be pumped from the Heyshope Dam to the Geelhoutboom station for transfer to the Morgenstond and Grootdraai dams that are very low because as the country is experiencing a serious drought‚ it said in a statement released on Friday.

The Heyshope dam is a bass fishing destination about 30km from Piet Retief. Grootdraai dam on the Vaal River near Standerton was built in 1981 to provide water to Sasol plants and to Eskom’s power stations on the coalfields. The Morgenstond dam near Amsterdam serves municipal and industrial needs. Fishing is also popular at these two dams.

The department asked “those communities‚ especially farmers and farm communities‚ close to the canal and river to be cautious and apply all relevant safety measures as the volume of water in the canal and river will be increased during the transfers”.

It warned that people tempted to divert‚ impede or tamper with the flow of the water would be dealt with in terms of the National Water Act.
