The presidency announced on Wednesday that the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) will conduct a probe into the Eastern Cape department of education.
Presidency spokesman Harold Maloka said President Jacob Zuma had made the proclamation following information received from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
He referred further questions to justice and the SIU‚ who could not immediately be reached for comment. Eastern Cape education acting superintendent-general Ray Tywakadi said he was not in a position to comment.
According to a statement released by Maloka‚ Zuma had in terms of the SIU and Special Tribunals Act‚ 1996 (Act No. 74 of 1996)‚ signed a proclamation authorising the SIU to “investigate allegations in respect of certain affairs” of the Eastern Cape department of education.
He said the SIU would investigate allegations of serious maladministration; improper or unlawful conduct by employees or officials; unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property; unlawful‚ irregular or unapproved acquisitive act‚ transaction‚ measure or practice having a bearing upon state property; intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property; and unlawful or improper conduct by any person‚ which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public.
