Hawks officer in court over travel claims and joyrides

A senior provincial officer of the elite crime-fighting unit‚ the Hawks‚ has appeared in court on charges relating to misuse of state vehicles for personal ends.

The SAPS said in a statement today: “Yesterday‚ the suspended head of the Hawks Maj-Gen Dinero Molatjane appeared briefly at the Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crime Court on charges of fraud and misuse of state resources”.

This stems from a two-year investigation. The head of the Hawks in Limpopo is accused of fraudulently “claiming kilometres whilst using a state vehicle as well as ferrying family members without authorisation”.

The case was postponed to August 23.

The Sowetan previously reported that Molatjana was accused of instructing junior officers to use state vehicles to transport her son from Polokwane to Pretoria every week. She is also alleged to have attended a wedding in Thohoyandou with her boyfriend and secretary and made it appear it was an official visit to claim for travel expenses.

She said then that the charges against her were false.
