Senior state prosecutor Advocate Shaun Abrahams is the new head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

President Jacob Zuma made the appointment on Thursday morning.

Abrahams’ appointment is hoped to add stability to the embattled NPA‚ whose head Mxolisi Nxasana left last month before an inquiry into his fitness to hold office could start.

He is reported to have received a R17-million payoff.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Dr Mashau Silas Ramaite temporarily occupied the top job before Abrahams’ appointment.

A statement from the Presidency said that “Abrahams has 17 years of experience in the prosecution service”.

“During this period‚ he has accumulated vast experience and has gained impeccable technical expertise. I am confident that he will be able to enhance the efficiency of the National Prosecuting Authority. I wish him well in this critical responsibility‚” said Zuma.

“The new National Director of Public Prosecutions holds the degrees of Baccalareus (B Iuris)‚ Baccalaureus Procurationis (B Proc) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB)‚ all from the University of Natal‚ now University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

City Press reported last month that Abrahams had been tipped for the top job.

“The president is avoiding a situation whereby he would be forced to make an appointment in court. Shaun is a senior prosecutor and has been recommended to be appointed to the position‚” a source told the paper.
