Rhodes to hold memorial service for student killed in hit-and-run

Rhodes University will hold a memorial service for Khanya Ndimba at the Rhodes Chapel on Thursday.

The third year Bachelor of Commerce student was tragically killed in a hit and run in the early hours of Saturday morning in Grahamstown’s CBD.

She and some friends had been studying at the Rhodes library and had gone to town to buy some study snacks. The car struck her while it was overtaking another vehicle in New Street at high speed. New Street is a busy pub and restaurant hub frequented by Rhodes students.

Both the driver and passenger abandoned the car and fled on foot‚ according to SA Police Services spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender.

A first-year Rhodes student subsequently surrendered himself to police on Saturday afternoon. He appeared in court on Monday on charges of culpable homicide and was released on R500 bail‚ said Govender. The matter was remanded to July 21 for further investigation.

Rhodes University media relations officer Catherine Deiner said the memorial service for Ndimba would be held at 12pm at the Rhodes Chapel.

Her funeral will take place on Saturday morning at the Nangoza Jebe Hall (Centenary Hall) in Port Elizabeth.

“Transport for students wanting to attend the funeral will be provided‚” said Deiner.

She would not be drawn on whether or not Rhodes would be pursuing internal disciplinary processes against the first-year student.

“At this stage it is a police investigation and the university is treating it as such‚” she said.
