President Jacob Zuma had parliament in stitches on Wednesday afternoon as he performed an imitation of Democratic Aliance leader Mmusi Maimane’s speech in which he described Zuma as a broken man leading a broken country.

Waving his elbows at his side and imitating Maimane’s voice‚ he said: “There’s a broken president in a broken country ... you know. Jirrah!“

In a later reference to Maimane’s speech‚ he said: “Let us respect one another‚ let us raise our issues with dignity“.

Referring to criticism of expenditure on his Nkandla homestead‚ Zuma said: “You can’t sit here and discuss the house of one man. Just a house“.

“If you listen to our good friends‚ the opposition — heh heh — you will think you live in another world. Some people who could not pronounce Nkandla‚ now they say ‘Nkandla‚ Nkandla‚ Nkandla’ ... he he heh! Haaai!“

He said the incessant references to Nkandla “emphasises the poverty of politics in our opposition parties“.

Referring to opposition filibustering‚ he said they said “point of order‚ point of order‚ point of privilege ... haibo!“

As he was jeered by opposition MPs‚ he said: “As elected leaders of our people in this house‚ we have a joint responsibility to build the country. We have a responsibility to demonstrate to those who elected us that we are here doing serious business“.

“I’ve met colleagues in Africa who look at our TV. They ask what is happening in your parliament. The conduct of some of the members of parliament raises doubt about their commitment to the work of this parliament.”

Zuma said: “I wish I could be given just one day to be the presiding officer. Just one day. But of course‚ it can’t happen“
