Court officials in the dock for selling dockets

Seven Randburg Magistrate’s Court officials including a prosecutor appeared in court this week on charges of corruption for allegedly selling dockets.

The officials‚ prosecutor Mxolisi Mdondolo‚ police constables Nnini Kekana and Masilwa Selowa‚ court clerks Zakele Mnisi‚ Caroline Masuku and Elizabeth Ndlovu and Rachel Bob‚ a cleaner‚ appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of conspiracy to commit corruption‚ corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

They allegedly sold dockets to people facing criminal charges in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

They were all released on bail and their case was postponed to next month for further investigation.

The officials were arrested last week after the South African Police Service’s Anti-Corruption Unit was alerted about corrupt activities taking place at the Randburg court.

Masuku and Bob were arrested at the Cresta Shopping Centre where they had gone to meet an undercover agent sent by the police unit. The agent was initially sent to court to make contact with Masuku and Mdondolo to facilitate an exchange of money and dockets.

Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said in a statement‚ “…a police operation was conducted at McDonalds‚ Cresta [shopping] Centre‚ whereby an agent handed over R3‚000 to Masuku … and Bob in exchange for the documentation. Both suspects were arrested for corruption”.

Mulaudzi said when the two court officials were apprehended‚ it emerged that they were not the only ones involved. Their arrest led to the arrest of the others excluding Mdondolo‚ who could not be found at the time. He handed himself over to the police on Sunday.
