MTN has promised to respond to striking employees’ grievances within seven days.

About 2000 workers launched a wage strike against the mobile operator on Wednesday.

In addition to higher pay, the workers are demanding an increase in allowances for work done on weekends and holidays.

MTN SA CEO Ahmad Farroukh received and signed the memorandum at Johannesburg.

"He undertook to respond after the company has thoroughly gone through their list of grievances".

MTN has already promised to give out at least 4% of annual salary to level 1 and 2 employees as well as a thirteenth cheque at the end of each year.

According to MTN SA, both the 13th cheque and the 4% annual salary are guaranteed irrespective of how the company performs.

MTN SA has since maintained that the strike has not affected much.

“The company apologizes to its customers for any service inconvenience caused by the strike, especially in the call centre and service centre environments.

“The protest action has had minimal impact on our operations. The core operations are running optimally.”
